I'm sure it's part Fanatics wanting to really put their own spin on the NHL jersey system.
The team wanting to use that as an opportunity to do what you've suggested seems likely. The 'problem' with a classic jersey is folks can get them, or ones that look like them, more easily on the secondary market
You change the jersey, folks who want to match the team for the C of Red have to buy more.
I'd almost put money on the City Connect/Hometown refresh or whatever being very Saddledome focused.
