This is a pretty lame and weak argument for being proactive. Goalies are a unique situation in that you can only start one of them the majority of the time
They had a 24 year old goalie who had won every award in the minors ready to be a full time goalie in the NHL. They wanted him to get the majority of starts
Markstrum was still an established starter and did not want to be the backup.
The Flames had to trade one of the two in reality and it wasn't an overly hard choice which to trade (Although Nashville chose the other route so I won't say its 100% obvious which to trade, let's go with 99.9%)
I don't give a lot of props for being proactive trading Markstrum. I do give props at the return he for him.
