He was awful in the 4 Nations, where his lack of foot-speed speed left him exposed and floundering. Easily their worst defenceman in that competition.
A best-on-best Olympics will be a different game than the NHL. As we saw in the 4 Nations, the speed of play is blazing fast, and any defensive lapses or weaknesses will be exposed. Every players needs to be able to skate and be relied on defensively.
That explains some of the roster decisions that people are unhappy about. A guy like Stone can get away with his heavy skating because of his elite defensive awareness, positioning, and ability to win pucks in tight. The same can’t be said for Fox, Scheifele, or Robertson.
