No.

Points percentage is literally the only way to rank teams when teams have played different amounts of games.

The Flames were 3 points back of San Jose, who were in fact holding the final wild card spot based on points percentage.

Utah's points percentage was worse than San Jose's, because they played 2 extra games. They were therefore in a worse position than San Jose, and therefore did not hold the wild card spot.

Calgary to San Jose was an apples to apples comparison because the games played were equal. Therefore it was correct to say the Flames were 3 points out of a playoff spot.

And the more interesting thing here is, the most important piece of context seemed to be lost by all of you accusing me of getting this wrong. You never mention that the Flames 1-7-1 start was mostly due to horrible scheduling. Since then, the Flames were (coming in to tonight) 14-10-3, so it was not a stretch to think this is more in line with the team's abilities. Take that points pace and apply it to the rest of the season, the Flames finish with 86 points. Not enough for playoffs, but certainly enough to lose out on a great player in the draft.

So yes, team tank had reason to be concerned. If tonight is a one-off and they go back to playing well, there will still be cause for concern.
