I pulled a very Larry David move at HomeSense yesterday.
While shopping for some other household items, I bought a larger garbage bin for my ensuite. Because I bought too much stuff to carry by hand, I had to buy one of their stupid $1.99 reusable bags. Already annoyed; I hate these things.
Got home and realized I already owned the exact same size of garbage bin in a different finish. Same size, same shape, same problem. Crap. Whatever... I kept the receipt, I'll return it.
I use the bag to bring the bin back the next day. Then I notice the bag still has the tag on it. It's in new, resaleable condition, which means… returnable. At least, as far as anyone has told me. I grab a better garbage bin and go to the cashier.
Me: "Hi, I'm returning this garbage bin and this bag, and buying this garbage bin."
Cashier: "We don't do returns on the bags."
Me: "Oh. That's not written anywhere; not on the tag, the receipt, or the bag display. My receipt says I can return anything I bought until January 8th."
Cashier: "Right, but our policy is we don't accept returns on the bags."
A policy? Now I'm locked in. I wanted my two dollars back; not because I needed it, but because -- at this point -- the alternative was owning a useless 'reusable' bag out of spite.
Me: "Well, if it's a policy, it should be written down, and I can't agree to your policy if it's not written down anywhere."
-- long pause --
Cashier: "We're just not supposed to take them back, but I'll do it this time."
I left with a new garbage bin and the correct amount of garbage in my life.
