It would be very on brand for ownership there, though... I wouldn't be surprised if those discussions about getting a star player equivalent (not really but you know what I mean) back in trade were earlier in the season, and as they fell down the standings it was easier for ownership to sign on to this path instead.
If so, that should rob any Canucks fan of hope that ownership will stick to a rebuild for long enough to do it properly; once they have a run of good play that looks like they might be in contention for a wild card they'll start trading picks and futures for playoff dates again.
