Buium almost certainly isn't going to be a Hughes quality player, but him being drafted at 10 doesn't have anything to do with that; it's more that there are like... 2 Hughes quality players every decade. If you look at the equivalent of Hughes and Makar for the 2010s it's probably Karlsson (15th overall) and Keith (2nd rounder).

The benefit of Buium over Hughes isn't that he's going to be another Hughes, it's that he could be in the next tier down and you trade that tier for 7 years of team control and the years of RFA contract value. If they had the cap space to sign Hughes to an 8 year extension instead of 6, or Elias Pettersson to a longer RFA deal instead of a 3 year bridge prior to this one, they'd be in much better shape.

We'll see if they make the same mistakes with this round of guys, Buium included, but my guess is "yes" - until their owner sells the team is going to continue to cut corners.
