The question would always be how much a team is willing to pay for Hughes. In the end, the answer was: "Lots". I was sure a good 20+ teams would be in on this. Sounds like there wasn't. Maybe the Canucks could have gotten more closer to the deadline, but that's a good package. I thought he would go for 3 good pieces, but he went for 4. In today's market, if the Canucks really want to rebuild, they can turn around and sell Rossi now for a 1st + something too. How much would Montreal pay up for Rossi?


As for re-signing Hughes - they have 1.5 years to convince him. Be a good top-end team, and maybe he decides to stay there? Like others have mentioned, maybe he doesn't want to go to NJ and displace his brother on PP1? I am doubtful anyone really wants to play in Minnesota, but if they turn into a consistent top-end team, why wouldn't he want to stay? Winning solves a lot of issues, and so does a pile of money. Give Hughes both, and he may find it difficult to say no.
