I think you’re underselling how well Gunn’s vision actually landed. Superman made about $617M off near universal critical praise and a word of mouth that sustained its box office performance weeks past what is typical for a blockbuster. Considering that most movies in the twilight of the DCEU were spectacular box office flops, this was practically a miracle. Gunn starting to rebuild brand equity of DC with that film is a huge win, even if it didn’t break any records.
If Supergirl is well reviewed, which I think is very likely considering the team behind this film and the material, I wouldn’t be shocked if it ends up beating Superman at the box office.
