There is a fine line of waiting for the right deal but also capitalizing on a top three draft pick.
Which would you prefer?
Ras for Player A, 1st round pick and a shot at one of the top three this season.
or
Ras for Player A+, 1st round pick. And then draft 10th overall this year.
Both scenarios still result in missing the playoffs and arguably playing some of the most boring hockey we have seen in decades.
Personally, I would say taking a bit less for the guys we are moving out and ensuring we get to draft a franchise altering player in the top three spots makes sense.

I think the "+" is the key clearly.
Is it a 3rd round pick?
Is it much more?
Is even the option without the "+" even available at the moment?
A parity locked league may not have the suitors ready to buy.
Can't we assume that when offers do actually come in that the Flames brass has a balance in mind between holding the line, and the value to the 1st round pick this year by trading the player and letting the team slide?
Seems like a stretch to me to assume they haven't analyzed the difference between the two.
My guess is they have likely lowered their internal ask factoring in exactly that.
