I don’t think I’ve ever had less faith in this organization and I like to think I’ve given them the benefit of the doubt on many occasions.
The Maloney interviews were astonishing in their lack of coherency and fundamental understanding of where your organization is as it relates to the vast majority of the fan base. Read the room before you grab the mic. Profoundly stupid to get on the soap box and say on one hand that drafting at the top of the draft is a fantasy and within two mins state that you intend to follow the Dallas model while sitting 32nd in the league with a product that is, frankly, terrible to watch. Maloney described the team as aspiring to be a ‘tough out’. Wtf? The backlash has been loud clear and well deserved.
I’m also loosing faith with the coaching staff as well. 6-7 weeks ago Devin Cooley was unplayable and we were looking to add a backup. Last week he was ‘excellent’. Which was is the wind blowing today?
Why the organization waited to announce these extensions is also mystifying. When did they plan to announce it? Their rationale has been they didn’t because of a bad start. Did they think this team was capable of reclaiming their comfortable spot of 9th in the conference to announce? ‘The best time to announce this is when we’re three points out at the deadline and just traded our second round pick for (wait for it) another small left hand shot middle of the line up forward’ en route to missing the playoffs by 1-5 points. This smacks of a teenager trying to hide something from their parents.
To top it off I still find it galling that the majority owner has moved to Switzerland to avoid paying taxes while taking tax payer dollars to fund his billion dollar arena.
Not a good time to be a Flames fan, honestly. If this team somehow ends up picking 6-10th overall this upcoming draft…..man.
