  4. Public and media backlash towards Maloney spanning multiple news cycles
  5. Public and media support for Conroy spanning multiple news cycles
  6. Two-year contract extension for Conroy

Conclusion:

Initial plan was to not extend Conroy, wether that was on the Flames' side or on Conroy's side is unclear; however, executive officers don't typically assume managerial functions or perform managerial duties unless a change is incoming. Public outcry and unanimous media support for Conroy is what led to this extension, which is further evidenced by the term only being two years. A one year term would have been too obvious, and a two-year term is middle ground between "show me" and "full confidence."

Remaining:

Not an ideal term, given the public suspicion of GM and boss not being on the same page, but it is what it is. What remains now is to see evidence of Conroy's level of autonomy. This should become clearer within the next month or two, as we look for pieces being shipped out and examine with the returns are.

That's all I have on this for now. I'm sure I've provided plenty of ammunition here for some of you to pick apart and "lol" at, but I'm committed to wanting to see this team I love become the most feared team in the league. I'm not interested in anything less than seeing the Flames being talked about the same way the Panthers were back in June. I want to hear things like "built for the playoffs," 'unstoppable," "this an absolute wagon of a franchise," etc.

Regardless of everything else, though, I am 100% relieved that at least Conroy is back under contract again. He's such a massive part of this franchise's history and bleeds red and gold every single day. As much as I selfishly want this team to be the pinnacle franchise of the NHL, I also want to one day see Conny in the Hall of Fame as a General Manager with multiple Cup wins under his belt.
Agree on the sequence, but not the conclusion. There's lots of info we don't know preceding your sequence. Plus Francis saying the deal has been agreed for weeks and that they wanted to announce when the team had momentum.

Old guy thinking, 'Let's not announce the extension while Conroy's team is sucking.' Probably worried that casuals would complain, 'why extend a guy who architected this last place team?'

Obviously, we know that's BS as he has done great with the mess he was handed.

Real learning for Flames, if they can learn anything, is give the fans more credit.
