Some covers surpass the original, or sound completely different.

As far as I'm concerned, if you're covering a song by someone, you should put your own twist on it. For example when my band covers While My Guitar Gently Weeps, we play the first few verses and choruses with a punk beat and power chords, then after the third verse slow it down to a regge/ska beat and on our CD got a Brazillian guitar hero to solo over it. It sound nothing like the original, and you music purists would hate it, but I find it fun. You couldn't tell that the ska part is the song, all it uses are the barre chords with a funk bass line.
