The money the team spent on James Neal is a red herring. They signed him in 2018 and traded him away in 2019. There is no possible way they could have taken into account, in 2018, that the 2021-22 season would be shortened because of Covid, that Gaudreau would perform poorly, or that he would hem and haw until the very last minute before rejecting an $84 million contract to play for less money closer to home.
Hell, there was no way they could even have known the cap would be flat after 2020. Covid
did not exist in 2018.
