I ran into people from all over the world who came to Sarajevo and area to participate in the war. Canadians, Americans, British, Australians, Ukrainian Cossacks, Chechen's, Russians etc. etc.
One compound near us had US Special Forces training Bosnian troops, the next compound over had Iranian Revolutionary Guards doing the same thing. Tons of ex French Foreign Legion veterans serving in every armed faction.
We ran into the CIA delivering weapons by helicopter on a regular basis to several of the factions.
That whole region was one massive free-fire zone and murder playground.
