That is the argument of the corporate shill.

Do you think the corporations are doing a great job? They are putting lead in your food to make it heavier so they can make more profit. They are rigging the price of basic foods (bread) so they can post record profits. They have created an oligarchy throughout the food supply chain that crushes independent farmers so that they can buy up more of our land for their mass production of food so that they can control the market even more and continue to maximize their profits.

They are not competitive, they are not responsible, and they are demonstrating the absolute failure of capitalism in the food market in Canada.

The issue with a public service is hardly ever the people doing the job, it is the politicians who come in and undermine the service by taking away funding or changing the service leadership to their friends who in turn take steps to dismantle the service. The challenge would be to find ways that enshrines the service and insulates it from future governments while still maintaining accountability of the service to deliver for the people.

Canada Post has been disrupted heavily by the rise of digital solutions (email) and expensive private alternatives (fedex) but they still clearly demonstrate value by providing a physical delivery services at a lower cost than the private alternatives with service availability in remote places that the private companies won't go to.

The biggest thing though is that food is unlikely to ever be disrupted or displaced as a requirement for human beings. It is absolutely essential and makes more sense to have a public option than many other services.
