I think the rumour is that there was a proposed offer sheet and he used it to extort as much as possible from the Oilers and get the same deal that the offer sheet would have been for.
He knows who butters his bread. Without McPoints, he'd be easily exposed on another team, so he still got as much money as possible with the Oilers while trying to set himself up to capitalize again on his next deal.
