With a slide you are making sure your foot is hitting the edge of the plate at the earliest possible moment.

That was literal inches away and closer than it should’ve been TBQH for the Dodgers. Infield is in to make that easy play and they almost flubbed it (as they almost did for the third out too).

But yes the ball needed to be hit to the outfield, not on the ground to second base.
Or the runner on third needed to be 4ft off the bag instead of 3ft
