Well, you see, if there's more than one force out available to a fielder, he gets to choose which runner he gets out, and he typically goes for the lead runner to avoid a guy in scoring position. That means that even if the hitter gets to first base, he didn't technically get a hit because the fielder just chose to get a different runner out instead of the batter.
