I'm not a big enough Superman fan to get the references, in fact I hate the alien prick.
However I'm sure it's a line from a comic or movie. Or a cab driver has the name of Clark Kent's uncle's neighbour's babbysitter's boyfriend.
I don't think they come out and say "look it's a bird, no it's a plane" at any point in the show.
