Another newb question.

I have to ignorantly ask how much of that is down to the pitcher's skill/fortitude and how much is luck? I'm asking more in reference to the two innings in a row against the mariners where he got out of bases loaded, one out with two double plays in a row. Both times if the ball is a couple feet either side we're talking runs scored and maybe talking a different story.

So I guess my question is how much can they control where the batter hits it? Both regarding direction and height?
