You can trash on him all you want but you are not being objective or factual with your position because he has bounced back from his 2 terrible years.
The point of the 20% retention is to bring his cap hit in line with his production value. Huberdeau was the 16th best LWer in the league last season for points and the 14th best LWer for goals. At $8.5M his contract is reasonable, maybe even good with the cap rising.
If you had player X, and player X scored 28 goals and 62 points last season on a low scoring bubble team, then you would probably suggest X would be worth $9M today based on recent signings. You would probably also suggest that X would be able to put up more points on a high scoring playoff team.
In my opinion, the biggest issue with my proposal is that I do not think Flames ownership would retain $2M per year for 6 years to make it happen.
