The benefit of the position the Flames are in is that they need a lot to open their window and have a lot they don’t need for where they’re currently at. So while some might say “why not skip Calgary and just trade Robertson for x return that Calgary would trade him for,” a team like Dallas is in their window and their focus is on getting over the top. A team like Anaheim or San Jose should be focused on the final pieces to open their window. What San Jose or Anaheim can offer Dallas might not be what the latter needs right now or what the former is willing to give up, which is where a team with more work to do, more vets, and a longer lead time to contention can come in.
