In the 80s and early 90s, teams would often get as many as 10 power plays in a game. It wasn't unheard of for 30 minutes out of 60 to be played at uneven strength, and a team with a good power play could reasonably expect to average a power play goal per game.
Last season no team scored more than 64 PPG, and the median was 49.5.
We're a very long way from special teams deciding more games than they did back then.
