When they say it's like a one year extension, they're talking about one year of not having to worry about not being able to re-sign him to a new contract. They wanted him to re-sign longer so they didn't have to worry about him leaving unless he demands a trade.

Without the new contract, McDavid would now be one year from free agency and eligible to leave the Oilers in 2026.
With the new contract, McDavid is now three years from free agency and eligible to leave the Oilers in 2028. He will be one year from free agency in 2027, which is two years from now, not one.
Why don't you understand that two equals two and not one?
