From what it looked like to me, this was more like 4th and 5 feet than 4th and inches. Sure he's averaging 5 yards, but that includes a 20 yard run where he bounced it outside, plus runs in other situations where the box isn't so loaded up. So the between the tackles drive ahead here just seemed a bit vanilla. On those 4th and short plays...there's often a chance to get a bigger play off a fake.
That said, I could claim San Fran should have tried at least one short slant on that last drive in the 4th quarter to Bourne rather than run into a wall of defenders 3 straight times. Easy to do sitting in my house vs being on the sidelines.
