So your other point about the type of #1C we get is also correct. We don’t get Gretzky, but we need to find a Niewendyck. I’m not sure if McTavish or Rossi fit that description, but if our scouts believe they do and the players are available then we have to make the deal.
Now is the time to spend that 2026 1st, while lots of GMs expect Flames to be a bottom feeder it is worth a lot. It has the most value right now, if we believe in this team’s chances.
We are probably mid at worst, and with better offence (including from the new guy) we’d be playoff bound (window opens).

Luck is going to play a huge role. Whether it is a player falling in the draft or exceeding draft status through development (Point, Bergeron, etc) or winning the lottery in a year where there is a 1C available (2023 for example with Bedard, Fantili, Carlson), there is no clear or easy way.
