Yeah, it sounds like he was part of group of kids that went for a walk together. It's not difficult to imagine a scenario where a 5 or 6 year old straggles behind with the other kids not noticing until it's too late. I wonder if the parents even knew he left with the other kids at the time as sometimes they just follow other kids.
I was at a park not that long ago where a kid went missing and the police had to come and lockdown the park and no one could leave. It turns out that the kid was playing with some other kids from two separate families and both families left at the same time to walk somewhere else and the kid tagged along. Each family thought the kid belonged to the other family and didn't figure it out until later that he belonged to neither of them. It is kind of a funny story in hindsight, but at the time it certainly wasn't.
