A silver lining way to look at it is....if they can't win 3/5 against the lower wild card team and a non playoff team (which I think will give them a pretty good shot), there's not much point in them being in the playoffs anyway. BUT they have earned themselves a position (through gritty comeback wins/close games) where they would still get in and have another chance if they fail to do that. Most of us have been awaiting the (seemingly inevitable reality) of some kind of Yankee surge or jays let down to bump us out of first for months. I'm honestly impressed that we are still in first, although obviously not impressed with the recent offensive output. The Yankees also just do not scare me as a team. I think what they showed in the world series is who they are.

Basically they have 2 chances to make the ALDS. if they win 3 of the next 5 games they are almost certainly in.
If not, then they have to win 2 out of the next 3 in the wild card round.
This team had one huge run in the middle but the difference between them and say the Tigers (or even the Twins who had a huge run at the start) is that they've consistently played a bit better than 500 ball the rest of the time.
If they can do 1 game better than 500 ball every week from now on they win the WS.
