If we develop players ahead of schedule, team exceeds expectations again this year and a decision to move the timeline to compete up a year is still very possible. His contract could be 1 we want to move and can't in a year or 2 and this is all for a guy that no way he closes the door on an extension because you waited 3-6 months.

No, but not every move you personally don’t think is good is a bad one and your interpretation of the situation probably misses most of the reality of it, not being in the room or understanding the team or the contract outlook.
If you think we should wait 3 months because signing now carries risk of this contract somehow handcuffing us in any way, I would say that’s mostly complaining for the sake of complaining and not particularly realistic.
Barring a career-ending injury, there is nothing that could change in the next 3-6 months that will make Lomberg any less worth signing.
