Just to defend the country (as I still believe there’s something worth defending) from the generalization and adding on to the above, I think some benefit of the doubt is definitely required.
Sure, there were people who know him and cheered knowing what they were cheering for (like Fonz). The country is also run by a pedo rapist, so it does attract a certain kind of morally bankrupt person.
Then there’s the ignorance factor. Kirk had around the same followers as David Pakman, and significantly less than the Young Turks. How many people would know off hand who either of those are? Here, probably more than average, but across the US? Very, very few.
Then add on top of it the calls coming from the right for violence and political persecution against anyone not praising Kirk or mourning him (from random social media accounts right up to the highest political office in the country), an incredibly violent, armed section of the population, and any trepidation over speaking up right now is completely understandable.
