He has a full NTC so he obviously controls his fate. Assume then that, if he’s going to be traded, he would only accept a trade to teams he considers legit contenders. That likely narrows the list down to maybe 5-6 teams. Of those teams, how many can fit him under the cap? Have to assume the oilers retain salary to maximize the number of teams they could trade him to. What does he bring back in trade? Has to be a haul even in those circumstances of limited options because the oilers would rather not trade him at all than trade him for a poor return - simply because of the optics of getting crushed on a trade for McDavid.

What would teams like that trade to acquire McDavid for a playoff run? Would they have enough?

but that's the catch 22... if you were mcdavid and want to win a cup with a contender, why would you ok a trade to a team that basically needs to give up a ton of good assets to acquire you? he needs need those assets on the team for that team to still be a contender
