I would bet that they decide to break away from the US and they might be interested in joining Canada just because they would not be able to join California.
And then if NY splits off, what happens with the states that are northeast of NY? You could probably have VT, MA, NH, CT, RI, and Maine thinking hard about moving with NY.
What is scary is how right wing the remainder of the US would be...

Yes. This is a fracture of the union. I don't really see how this moves forward without leading to civil war. You have Red states preparing to send troops to Blue states, they've already done it to DC. As soon as someone is killed by a National Guard troop from a red state, all hell will break loose.
It's bigger than this though, we've seen Britain falling down this path. The Labour party taking a hard right turn to restrict freedoms and appease the reformers, but that's going to fail as the UK Reformers are widely leading in polls, Canada is doing the same now under Carney's Liberal party.
Conservatism used to be about small government and limited regulation, but now it's all about finding scapegoats (immigrants, LGBTQ, etc.) and punishing them - it's driven from so much anger.
The future of western society is not about right versus left, that's just how the powerful have framed it for us.
