The only reason I could think of is if Price could actually spend time around the team, and around Askarov in particular. Have a former MVP goalie give advice to the future of the franchise. Especially if the Sharks were disappointed by getting Nadeljkovic instead of Alan, and Vladar as the backup. Then he might be worth it as a coach. That said, I doubt that's the case, or that Price would want that kind of role.

It was $2M, and yeah it seems like a strange move. Unless the owners find a way to make the money work in other ways outside of hockey. I guess insurance could play a big role, especially if it covers at least half.
