Again though that impacts his legacy. It will always be "he couldn't get it done on his own" which puts him a tier below all the other best players. And I think he's very focused on that legacy.
This COULD end up being the worst case scenario if:
- McDavid wants to see if they can win this year, and how sustainable that is going forward
- As the season progresses, as long as they are in a playoff spot, they can't trade him
- Which increases the risk that he walks for nothing. For instance, they make the playoffs, lose in the first round, and then that's enough for him to say "it ain't gonna happen here".
Having McDavid walk for nothing would be a disaster.
