Set the ground rules right away regarding food, bills, entertaining etc.
I had a roommate that had her boyfriend over every night. They were really good about the food thing, but when it came to electricity and rent it was always "but he has his own place" and my response was "then start spending some time there, or start ponying up your share of the bills."
The entertaining thing is huge. This same roommate would invite a bunch of friends over without letting me know that this was happening so I could plan around it. She didn't want me around, but didn't want me spending the entire night in my room either.
Above all - communication is king.
