Like it or not, and no matter how much Trump lies and says he has no idea who these guys are, the P2025 guys are very much laying out the playbook for how the US is acting. As much as it pains me to say (and I think the meeting is bad for optics) it makes sense to understand the person across the table. Like it or not, we will forever be the US's neighbors and what they do directly affects us no matter how much we try to de-couple. I'd rather we understand their decision making process instead of taking the "wait it out and pray a Democrat wins" next time. I also suspect that there is an understanding that Canada realizes it's entirely plausible that there won't be another fair election for a while in the US and to prepare for that possibility we need to fully understand their thought process to prepare on our end.

I don't think there is any malicious intent from Carney's end to meet with them, other than a meeting to fully understand their perspective and decision making process. I am also not blind to the fact that if PP was the PM, or even Danielle Smith was meeting with these people, the backlash would be extremely fierce. Would I give them the benefit of a doubt in that situation? Honestly, probably not.
