That doesn't happen very often. Flames could try and re-sign him a year early and get a sense of what he wants to do that summer. Trade value is higher at the lower AAV.
To buy UFA years, 5 years or longer to do that. My guess would be the AAV would be at least 40% higher.
Sign him 5 years and we could have a similar situation as Hanifin and Ras where they nix trades and refuse to sign with teams trading for them.
NTC can be negotiated once you hit UFA status
