The problem is that when we speak about the theory of what is going on it is with the assumption that we have a level playing field where everyone is playing by the rules. In reality we have a conservative movement that is heavily funded by rich people and corporations with the goal of consolidating power and money into themselves.
For decades they have been buying up our trusted media. Newspapers, TV, and now online platforms and content creators. Being a right wing content creator will get you piles of money and support because you are feeding the machine that will ultimately give the corporations power over government.
Most of the elder generation that still buy the newspaper and trust what it says do not realize that they are reading right-wing-American propaganda that is designed to rip apart a resource rich country for the benefit of America.
America has been doing this forever but their focus has always been on other countries in the middle east or south america... but now they have turned their playbook on us and a big chunk of Alberta are lapping it up instead of seeing it as the attack that it is.
Smith and the UCP were exposed and continue to be exposed for all of the garbage that they do... but are the people actually learning about all of these scandals? Most people that I talk to who claim to still be conservative are oblivious to the list of horrible things the UCP has done and refuse to believe that they are real.
MBates mentioned a "free democracy" but Alberta (and Canada) do not currently have a free democracy. Our democracy is actively under attack by foreign nations and bad actors within the Alberta government are supporting this attack. Steps need to be taken to defend our democracy and make it free and THEN we can trust the democratic process to play out.
