So I havent watched The Phantom Menace in a long, long time, nor do I intend to, but I got a rec for the Duel of the Fates scene on youtube and figured...'why not?'

I didn't really think much of it, but I had recently watched Galaxy Quest.

But in the Duel of the Fates...what is this room? With the giant laser partitions that appear to lead to a room with nothing in it but some sort of bottomless pit?

I was thinking 'Reactor Core' of some kind, but its right off the Starfighter Hangar Bay so that wouldnt make any sense. What was this place? What was it for?
