It's not unusual for teams to overpay for rentals closer to the TDL. Going into the season when teams don't know where they stand, they are going to be less excited to acquire a player on an expiring contract they can't re-sign. Come closer to the TDL when the picture is starting to form, teams are more likely to say eff it, and throw their chips in.
Might as well wait it out at this point, as long as Conroy doesn't get cold feet if the Flames are also in the mix. Barring the unlikely event that the Flames are a serious contender of course.
