I think a better lens is it became visible to outsiders.
American culture has and is this. It's a pressure cooker of unimaginable proportion to most people outside its borders.
It's bread a me first attitude, which means anything that appears in your favor is good, any appears bad is bad.
If you look at what moves needles down there the most economy, crime, racism/culture, and COVID all do so because they move the needle for the most people, and are me vs them issues.
Yes school shootings are crime, but for their population they are still rare for people to experience. The trade off is losing something (guns), that someone else will get (criminals/government). So its not a needle mover, and likely will not be. Its shouting into a black void.
If you read this far, know I am not endorsing this, it's just tiring to expect different and be disappointed.
