I think you can say that about a lot of metal genres. As there with the original four Seattle grunge bands, there was a spawn of bands emulating the style of Korn's self-titled debut. Even established bands like Machine Head, Slayer, Sepultura, In Flames, etc took a stab at Nu Metal so I do believe the genre was real and had a big influence leading to some of the most commercially successful metal acts ever like Linkin Park and of course Deftones, Slipknot, SOAD, Korn, Limp Bizkit (I have to list them because of their commercial success).
