I’ve played the games a bunch (fallout is my wife’s favourite franchise) and they very much made elements of the TV show based on the game, the story has very little to do with the game.
Fallout 4’s main storyline is that you become cryogenically frozen in a vault with your wife and infant son during nuclear war. At some point your wife and infant son are thawed out, she is killed and he is kidnapped. You’re then trying to find your missing son throughout Boston post nuclear war.
