He probably isn't ready to move on, including just after his bud Leon committed. But he doesn't want to tie himself there for the rest of the career. I think he signs for 3 years.
I think he knows that not winning a cup for the team that drafted him will significantly affect his legacy.

I think he really values his legacy too. If you look at the numbers, he is 118 points away from 1200. He has a chance to have 1200 points before he is 30. Only an injury can stop that.
He also is 31 points behind Yzerman for 11th all time in playoff points, once again even a 3rd round exit he could be 11th all time in playoff points before he is 30.
If he wins 1 cup in Edmonton, moves on and wins 1-2 more elsewhere (brings a cup back to Toronto would be huge) and finishes up with 2000+ points and 2nd all time in playoff points. Alot of people will pick in as the best player in the history of the game.
