Well that's the bigger debate. If one believes that they should have re-built at the time, which is valid, then basically every move they made was the wrong one.
But if you accept the reality that they were not going to re-build and examine this deal through that lens, then the deal makes sense.
In either case, I just can't see how it is catastrophic. At the end of the day, they traded a mid round pick for a forward who has been their leading producer, and has latent value that can still be extracted should they trade him.
This franchise has made catastrophic deals. This ain't one of them.
