Yeah, it's just been part of the tradition of tennis throughout the years to be respectful and quiet during the serve and that includes during 1st and 2nd serve. The one exception to that is the Davis Cup, but the players seem to accept and recognize that there will be noise when they are serving.

As far as the Montreal crowd is concerned, I thought they were fine. You will always have a few yahoos that want to be the center of attention and spoil things, but overall it was good. Compared to US Open crowds when Serena was playing or French Open crowds when a French player is on court, that crowd was nothing.
