I think they know where they stand including that he will be leaving and traded at some point. Public comments are likely designed not to tank the player's value.
Furthermore I think the primary interested teams in the summer were those that wanted him for the long-term. As we move into the season that will shift to where he will be viewed more as a rental.
I don't think they are letting the player dictate the direction. I think it's how the market viewed him and how that will start to shift from a player teams wanted to acquire and sign, to a player teams acquire as a rental with a chance to re-sign.
