IMO this oversharing to larger groups issue is what is fundamentally breaking society. The way humans socialize depends on intermediate spaces, where we can engage in public conversations with a small group. Our brains are limited in how many people we can interact with, we know once it passes 150ish people our brains get overloaded and we become unable to effectively converse with people. For large groups we switch to more of an oration communication style where we talk at people instead of to them.
There were never any laws to protect these intermediate spaces because historical we did not need them. Technology limited us so global communication and surveillance was not a possibility. And we could control the spread of information outside the gorup using our innate socialization strategies of shunning and exclusive people who break the rules.
Then technology changed this, and the limitations which made intermediate sized group communication possible disappeared. Then on top of that people (social media) figured out that they can exploit the way large group commutation overloads our brains for profit. They use these socialization flaws in how our brains work to manipulate and addict us, not unlike how gambling exploits the flaws in our brain with respect to statistics and rewards. Destroying intermediate spaces where our brains are happy, to push us all into their spaces where they fan keep us stressed and unhappy but much more exploitable.
Old forums like CalgaryPuck are some of the last of these intermediate spaces, which is why it is so much more mentally satisfying to communicate here, it is small enough to know people. You can also see much better communication here between people who disagree, because here even the jerks are still a person and not the masses.
I think the recent posts on this thread inadvertently summarized this well: You post on CalgaryPuck for a conversation. You post on social media for internet points.
It is very natural and human to want to be able to have a public convention without it being broadcast to the whole world. Our inability to do that anymore is stressing us all put to the point where our ability to work together as a society is breaking.
I have no solutions.
