I've been to Croatia, Bosnia, and Montenegro. First thing is do what Kybosh said with the rooms. It's a really affordable way to travel and you get to meet some interesting people.

Croatia - Croatia is unbelievably pretty. Make sure you go to Plitvice National Park. Check out some of the islands too. I stayed on Korcula and it was pretty outstanding. I think a lot of the islands are amazing though. Quite tourist friendly as well.

Bosnia - I went to Mostar and Sarajevo. I was travelling with a Bosnian so that helped but in general most people speak English and people are quite friendly. They are really excited to see that you are visiting their country. Bosnia has had a fairly ugly recent past so appreciate that there will be a lot of reminders of the war around.

Montenegro - I only went to Kotor but that place was kinda cool. Not many tourists, really pretty spot. Once you travel to all these spots you really notice how much they don't like their neighbours.

Anyways, hope that helps.
